Poo (Part 6): THE STRAINS THAT STOP THE STRAIN

Yes, we are still talking about poo and, in particular, CONSTIPATION.

Previously, I posted about the importance of prebiotics (from food), which is a group of fibres that provide the beneficial bacteria in your gut with the food to make Short Chain Fatty Acids (SCFAs).

And SCFAs help with constipation, demonstrating the capacity to soften the stool, increase the weekly number of bowel motions, and decrease abdominal pain and straining with bowel motions.

We also talked about the MICROBIOME-CONSTIPATION CONNECTION and the importance of probiotics in supporting bowel function. But, did you know that NOT ALL STRAINS ARE THE SAME?

Probiotics can produce antimicrobial substances that PREVENT pathogenic microbes (unhealthy bacteria) from surviving within the gut, reduce inflammation within your digestive tract, and prevent pathogenic organisms from attaching to your gut lining.

But, some strains of probiotic bacteria are better at this than others, so it is important to get the right strains to increase stool softness, gut motility, and the feeling of complete evacuation.
